The 2024 Kia Sportage has earned a top safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Top Safety Pick+ nod is the nonprofit group’s highest recognition. To get it, a model has to get a “good” rating in several crash tests. Its headlights must also garner acceptable or good ratings as standard in all trims, and a front crash-prevention system with advanced or superior ratings in vehicle-to-pedestrian tests must be available.

Kia updated the side structure of the Sportage with the new model, so it meets all of the higher-tier award’s requirements, IIHS said in a press release.
