Earlier voluntary buyout offers are part of its effort to reduce its salaried workforce of about 58,000 through attrition rather than layoffs, CEO Mary Barra said.

General Motors is laying off hundreds of contract workers to further reduce costs, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The layoffs follow 5,000 of voluntary buyouts of salaried U.S. employees and some global executives announced in March as GM targets $2 billion in cost cuts over two years.

The several hundred contract worker cuts come across several GM locations in global product development, the paper reported. Most of the jobs were full time.

The Detroit-based automaker has said the cost cuts are needed to help it stay competitive. Legacy brands like it are positioning themselves for a transition to mostly electric lineups over the next decade.
