An electric SUV snagged a top safety award after going through crash-test paces.

The midsize 2024 Kia EV9 earned good ratings in several safety tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It also got a good rating in the pedestrian front crash-prevention test; the vehicle comes front crash prevention as standard.

The nonprofit group rated the vehicle’s headlights as good after Kia updated headlights on two trims that previously drew poor ratings, thereby cutting glare.

The overall showing gave the SUV the institute’s Top Safety Pick award, the group’s second-highest rating.
