Kawasaki, Honda Announce Motorcycle Recalls

Motorcycle makers Kawasaki and Honda are recalling certain models to fix problems that could put riders in danger because of engine or brake failures.

Kawasaki says it is recalling some2011 Ninja ZX-10 models because of an electrical problem. In a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the company says it is possible for part of the wiring harness to get pinched between the rear subframe and the rear fender, or between the rear subframe and a bolt holding the seat cover, reported The Wall Street Journal.

The pinching can damage the wiring and cause a short between wires and the frame, or among the wires, which could result in the engine stopping suddenly. An engine stalling while the bike is being ridden increases the risk of a crash. The company says the recall affects 2,560 motorcycles.

Under the recall dealers will repair the bikes as necessary and reroute the main wiring harness free of charge. Owners may contact Kawasaki’s customer service at 866-802-9381.

Honda is recalling certain ST1300 and ST1300A sport-touring motorcycles, and ST1300PA police motorcycles from the 2008 through 2010 model years to fix a problem that could cause the rear brake to fail.

The company said that when the bike’s rear suspension is fully compressed or bottomed-out repeatedly, the hose to the hose to the rear brake reservoir may become damaged and leak brake fluid. If this happens the rear brakes will lose their effectiveness, increasing the risk of a crash.

Under the recall, which includes 2,232 bikes, dealers will replace the rear brake reservoir hose free of charge.
