WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Despite two fewer selling days than a year ago, total light vehicle sales in June rose 1.2% to 1.42 million units. The seasonally adjusted annual rate also rose despite less selling days, rising from 15.88 million units one year ago to 16.98 million. June’s SAAR also bested May’s 15.88 million-unit rate. The following is a breakdown of sales performance by manufacturer:
BMW: The BMW Group reported June sales of 35,577 vehicles, a 5.7% increase from a year ago. On a year-to-date basis, BMW Group sales increased 5.1% to 181,534 units sold in the first half of the year. Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 11.5% from a year ago to 30,201 units. On a year-to-date basis, BMW brand sales increased 12.1% to 157,382 units sold in the first half of the year.
MINI USA reported total sales of 5,376 units in June, an 18.2% decrease from a year ago. On a year-to-date basis, MINI USA sold 24,152 units, a decrease of 25.4% from a year ago.
Chrysler: The Chrysler Group realized its best June since 2007, with sales increasing 9% from a year ago to 171,086 units. The group’s Jeep, Dodge, Ram Truck and FIAT brands also posted year-over-year gains in June vs. one year ago. Leading the way the Jeep brand, which realized its best-ever June with a 28% sales increase vs. a year ago.
The Chrysler Group also extended its streak of year-over-year sales gains to 51-consecutive months in June. The Jeep Patriot, Compass and Wrangler each posted their best sales ever for the month of June. Additionally, the FIAT 500L, Dodge Journey crossover, and Dodge Dart compact car each logged their best June sales ever. Ram pickup truck sales were up 12%, marking the pickup’s best June sales in 10 years.
Ford: Ford posted June U.S. sales of 222,064 vehicles, a decline of 6% from a year ago. The OEM posted retail sales of 145,989 vehicles — a 5% decline from a year ago — while fleet sales totaled 76,075 units, a 7% decline.
Despite the declines, the Ford Fusion posted its best-ever June performance, with sales increasing 13.5% from a year ago to 27,604 units. Lincoln sales fell 3% from a year ago to 7,271 units in June. Lincoln sales, however, are up 16% on year-to-date basis, and the brand is expected to get an added boost with the impending launch of the new MKC.
General Motors: General Motors dealers delivered 267,461 vehicles in the U.S. in June, a 1% increase from a year ago. By channel, retail sales were up 1% and fleet sales were up 2%. Buick had its best June since 2006, with deliveries up 18% year ago. The increase was driven by an 82% increase in Encore deliveries, a 33% sales increase for the LaCrosse, a 26% increase for the Regal and a 5% increase for the Enclave.
GMC also had its best June since 2006, with deliveries up 11% during the period. The increase was driven by strong demand for the redesigned Yukon, which was up 120% in sales, and the Yukon XL, which realized a 70% sales increase. Also leading the way were the Terrain, with sales up 8% from a year ago, and the Savana, which realized a 129% sales increase.
Sales for Cadillac were up 57% from a year ago, while the SRX posted a 19% sales gain. The brand’s performance marked its best June since 2008.
Honda: American Honda Motor reported June sales of 129,023 units. The Honda division posted sales of 117,817 units, while Acura sold 11,206 units. On a year-to-date basis, American Honda sales reached 739,436 units. Setting the pace for the month were Honda's core models: the Accord, which realized a 2.1% sales gain, the Civic, which posted an 8.7% increase, and the CR-V.
Acura sales reflected the decreasing supply of TL and TSX models as the company prepares for launch of the 2015 TLX line later this summer. Additionally, the MDX and RDX continued to sell at a near record pace, pushing Acura truck sales up 6.1% for the month.
Hyundai: Hyundai posted its best June ever and the best opening six-month period in its 28-year history. For the month, sales rose 4% to 67,407 units sold, while sales were up 1% on a year-to-date basis through June.
By model, the sub-compact Accent posted a 9% sales gain for the month and 16% increase in sales for the first six month of 2014. Equus sales were up 28% for the month and up 16% on a year-to-date basis; sales of the Santa Fe were up 17% from a year ago and 26% for the first the six months of 2014.
Mazda: The automaker reported its best June sales month since 2004 with 26,208 units sold, a 16.5% increase from a year ago. On a year-to-date basis, sales through June were up 7.9% vs. last year, with sales totaling 156,431 units.
Leading the way was the Mazda6, which realized its best June since 2006 with a 24.8% sales increase. The Mazda CX-5 realized its best June ever, with sales increasing 15.9% from a year ago to 7,943 units sold.
Mercedes-Benz: Mercedes-Benz reported its best-ever June sales, with sales of its Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter and smart model lines increasing 8.2% from a year ago to of 29,380 units sold. Monthly retails for the Mercedes-Benz brand alone increased 8.6% to 26,506, bringing year-to-date volumes to a milestone 151,624 units. Adding year-to-date sales of 11,483 for Sprinter Vans and 4,647 units for the smart line, MBUSA delivered its best first-half sales total in its history with 167,754 units sold.
June sales were led by the C-, E- and M-Class model lines. The E-Class took the top spot with 6,500 units sold, a 25.5% increase from a year ago, while sales of the C-Class totaled 5,607. The brand's top-selling SUV, the M-Class, rounded out the Top 3 with sales totaling 3,891 units, a 6.6% increase from a year ago. At the high end, the flagship S-Class achieved its ninth consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains, with sales increasing 111.7% from a year ago to 1,780 units sold.
Mitsubishi: Mitsubishi Motors reported June sales of 6,021 units, a 13.7% increase from a year ago. For the first six month, sales were up 30.2% from the year-ago period — marking the company’s best first-half sales performance in three years and the second best since 2008.
The Outlander Sport five-passenger compact crossover/SUV led the way with sales of 2,433 units for the month and 15,322 units for the first six months of the year. June was also the fourth consecutive month that Outlander Sport sales exceeded 2,400 units.
Nissan: The Japanese automaker announced a June sales record, with sales increasing 5.3% from a year ago to 109,643 units. The Nissan Division also set a June record with 101,069 units sold for the month, an increase of 6.4%.
Sales of the Versa subcompact vehicle increased 33.4% from a year ago to 11,613, while Sentra sales increased 67.6% from a year ago to 17,097. Sales of the all-electric Nissan LEAF also set a record, with deliveries increasing 5.5% from a year ago to 2,347 units.
Infiniti reported U.S. sales of 8,574 units in June, a decrease of 5.9% vs. one year ago. Sales of Infiniti's sports sedans, which include the new Infiniti Q50 and the G37, totaled 3,815 units, a 4.3% increase from a year ago. The QX80 full-size luxury SUV also posted a strong sales month, with sales increasing 1% to 921 units.
Toyota: Toyota, Scion and Lexus reported total June 2014 sales of 201,714 units, an increase of 11.9% from June 2013. On a year-to-date basis, the Toyota division sales increased 11% from a year ago to 178,196 units sold through June.
By model, Camry sales were up more than 13% from a year ago and up more than 7% on a year-to-date basis. Sales of the all-new Corolla were up 17%, with sales totaling nearly 31,000 units in June. Trusck sales for the Toyota division were flat from a year ago but up 7.8% for the first six months of 2014 vs. one year ago.
As for Lexus, the ES posted sales of more than 5,500 units in June, a 6.5% increase from June 2013 and up 14% for the first six months of 2013.
Volkswagen: The German automaker reported 28,827 units delivered in June, down 22% from June 2013. Passat deliveries totaled 7,222 units for the month, with Passat TDI sales accounting for 32.1% of that total.
Audi reported June 2014 sales of 16,867 vehicles, a 23.1% improvement from a year ago and the brand’s 42nd consecutive month of record monthly sales. The automaker also set a second-quarter record with 49,121 vehicles sold. Year-to-date sales increased 13.6% to 84,349 vehicles sold, marking the company best-ever first-half performance.
Porsche: Porsche announced June 2014 sales of 4,102 vehicles, marking the best June in company history. For the first half of 2014, Porsche delivered 22,919 units in the U.S. market, a 7.6% increase vs. the same period last year. The latest arrivals, the Macan S and Macan Turbo — Porsche’s first compact SUV — recorded more than 2,000 sales during their first six weeks in the market.
