Automotive recalls fell in the third quarter to their second lowest level in two years, but the total number of affected units actually surged.
Sedgwick data show a 3% drop in recall events to 235 in the quarter while recalled units jumped 44% to 7.1 million. 2024 volume is on track for a three-year high.
Though recall events were down in the quarter, year-to-date numbers are elevated at 740. Sedgwick said just two other years in the past decade have seen more recall events at this point in the calendar year: 2018 and 2021.
Equipment issues led all recall causes in the third quarter with 46 events, or about 20% and that category’s highest level in two years, with four straight quarters of growth, Sedgwick said.
Volume-wise, electrical issues led recall causes, affecting 2.8 million units, up 245% quarter-over-quarter.
