WASHINGTON — A new survey conducted by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund and the Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety Foundation found one in nine pre-owned vehicles on AutoNation dealership lots in July and August were subject to an open manufacturer recall.

AutoNation owns more than 300 dealerships and is America’s No. 1 automotive retailer. U.S. PIRG and CARS analysts surveyed 2,429 vehicles at 28 locations in 12 states and determined 285 had at least one unrepaired recall, including several belonging to the global Takata airbag recall that began in 2015.

“The only way that AutoNation can ensure a worry-free purchase is to repair every recalled vehicle before selling it.”

There is a federal law against selling new vehicles — but not used vehicles — with open recalls. In June, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) introduced legislation, the Used Car Safety Recall Repair Act, to close that loophole.

In a press release, PIRG official Adam Gabler alluded to AutoNation’s promise of a “worry-free” purchase experience.

“The only way that AutoNation can ensure a worry-free purchase is to repair every recalled vehicle before selling it,” Gabler said.
