Approximately 10 million Americans now use Health Savings Account-eligible insurance plans, an increase of 25 percent from last year, according to a census released by America's Health Insurance Plans and reported by AOL Small Business. Just 1 million people used the plans in 2005.
The tax-deductible accounts have become popular among some small-business owners, because they allow them to provide health-care coverage they otherwise would not be able to afford.
Health Savings Accounts were authorized in 2004. Since then, America's Health Insurance Plans has tracked the market by using data from virtually all private account insurers. The Washington, D.C.-based group represents almost 1,300 carriers, which insure about 200 million Americans.
